Vintage Clothing and the Movie: Australia

Ms. Nicole Kidman graces the cover of Vogue magazine (July 2008). Kidman is starring with the eye-catching Hugh Jackman (X-Men’s wolverine) in Australia due in the theaters November 2008. This is a period movie (WWII era). Kidman’s character inherits a ranch and Jackman is the hired hand that helps her hold it all together. War breaks out, the two become romantically involved…, the rest…, is in the movie. Lol

The Vogue spread includes an interview with the twosome; and oh choice, it includes a few photos of Kidman in beautifully sculptured garments.

Lately I have been drawn to vintage clothing. Part of the attraction has been simulated by my fellow blogging friends and new re-releases of vintage patterns by various pattern companies. I have picked up a few from JoAnn’s and Hancock’s. Plus I have one banker box devoted to patterns published in the early part of the century. As if I don’t have enough on my plate already.

I don’t know when, but if the Lord’s willing and the creek don’t rise, I will definitely make up some of these vintage outfits.

Movie - Jumpers

Disappointment their name is 'Jumper'. This was possibly one of the most promising and disappointing movies in the box office. For all the cool, shiny trailers, media hype and SAMUEL L JACKSON, this movie bombed worse than 'Snakes on a' Plane.
Don't get me wrong. It was a good idea, but honestly, any depth or story the movie might have pretended to have was lost in the special effects.
It seemed as though the entire thing was watered down. The plot progression was predictable and the character's actions seemed reckless, yes, even those of Samuel. You couldn't find their motivation but what you could find...was a lot of dizzying camera angles and 'whooshy' effects. So, I would suggest that you take a pass on this one or wait until it comes on cable.

Worth seeing: Juno

Peace!

The Great Debaters - Denzel Washington

This was an excellent film. I love movies that shed a positive light on African-Americans. Denzel Washington and the cast of this movie brought this story to life. To see the Melvin B. Tolson story of his phonomenonal debate team was beautiful in itself. In my opinion, this movie was well scripted and acted. The cast of young people was outstanding. Their passionate performance catapulted you back in time, making the viewer (me) experience the 1930's. The viewer feels the struggle, the fear, the determination, the triumph of victory. My hat's off to Mr. Forest Whitaker for bringing this story to the big screen. This is a must see movie, not for the "beautiful looking people", but for the beauty of love, talent, and victory.

I am Legend - Big Willie Style

Movie pick this weekend: I am Legend. This was a different type of movie for Will. He's a scientific and the only person left in New York City. He is immuned to a deadly mutating virus. I won't tell the story, but I liked it. It's a cross between "Cast Away" and "Outbreak" with a Stephen King twist, a little scary. It was exciting and thought provoking. A blockbuster this weekend.

I'm a huge Will Smith fan, since his days on the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" show. So I'm a little bias.

Other movies seem:

Hitman - Didn't like
American Gangster - Like
This Christmas - Like

This is only my opinion of these movies.

To See:

Beowulf
The Mist
Things We Lost in the Fire
Perfect Holiday
Golden Compass
Debator??? New Denzel Washington movie out Christmas day
Aliens vs. Pedator out Christmas day

Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married

This weekend I went to see Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I get Married”. It’s a great movie. There is nothing to dislike about this movie. The cast, the storyline, and cinema photography were all great. It is always a welcomed change to see a movie that speaks to the inter-personal relationships of friends and married couples. This movie more than scratches the surface of those things that strengthen, weaken or destroy relationships or families. In my opinion Tyler Perry is phenomenal. I love his artistry and am happy for his success in the movie industry. He has gone from sleeping in a car to owning a production company! Wow!
