Fall Is In The Air - Sewing Plans Blue and Red Wardrobe Capsule 2020

Fall is in the air and it time for me to start planning what I want to sew in the upcoming months.  To continue my general wardrobe capsule planning, the next color theme is blue and red.  My planning strategy was born out of the fabric colors in my collections.  I have several yardages of blue and red tones.

Above is a picture of my color palette fan, the same palette that I use to purchase fabric, to show you some of the blue and red tones that will be appearing on my blog this fall. The overall palette fan has limited shades of blue and red.  I'll also include darker shades of blue and red, like black navy and maroon.  These two colors will be the principle  shade of the garments that I will make.

I'm not done with the Green Wardrobe Capsule.  There is more to come.  My plan was to include two more garments with the first segment, but I decided to start the new capsule for fall.

Moving from the infamous UFO bind to the sewing table, is a silk crepe blouse, McCall M6512, that I started at least six years ago. It's been cut and bagged all this time. I hope it still fits. ;-)

Another project is my McCall M6041 jacket that I started a started sewing a few weeks ago.  These are just a few things I hope to make during the fall months ahead.

Parting Shot:  One of my favorite restaurants, Francesca's on Taylor Street, near downtown Chicago, is permanently closed after many, many years of service.  This was the gathering place for me and my dear co-workers and friends.  We celebrated birthdays, Christmas, Fridays, pay days, etc. at this wonderful place.

Color - New Life New Beginnings with Greenery - 2017 Color of the Year

Pantone has named Greenery the color of the year. It symbolizing renewal.  It speaks spring.  Greenery is the new neutral.  Pantone has provided several color combinations from brights to pastels. Surprisingly, there are many color combinations that I didn't imagined would work together.  Luckily enough, many of the palettes contained a few colors from my personal color palette (outlined in red) that will work for me.

Below are the palettes each having a catchy name associated with them.  My favorites are Moody Blooms and Fathomless because they contain many of my favorite colors. What are your favorite combinations?  Will these palettes influence the color fabric, garments, hair you select this year?

Inspiration - My Fall Color Pallet: Color No. 2 Mustard

Mustard is a favor color of mine. But the funny thing is I don't have much of it in my wardrobe. Well this fall I decided to make a point to add a few mustard colored pieces to my wardrobe. It looks great with navy and rust. Here are a few of my inspiration photos that I've collected over the past several months.

Do you Follow Color Trends?

Do you follow color trends? Or do you stick to the colors that complement the color of your skin, eye, and hair? With each season comes a trendy color palette that many follow because it features the "in" colors of the season.

Ethel Harms did a color analysis for me while I was in Portland, OR. It revealed that I should use a bright-medium autumn palette. Many of the colors are not in my current wardrobe, and there are many colors I've worn for years that are. My palette has no pink/fuschia or grey hues in it (I love these colors and have plenty of fabric to proof it. Lol). These colors make me look pale or grey.

The spring/summer colors this year are tangerine, mint green, bright yellow, kelly green and coral. My first thought was oh..., I can wear all of these. To date, I have not made or bought anything of these colors. My color palette contains only one of these colors. Surprise to me!

During the color analysis, Ethel placed the colors swatches close to my face, I could clearly see how the colors reflected or repelled the vibrate natural tones in my complexion. What a revelation. I'd never thought to have a color analysis, always thinking I was sure of the colors that work well with my skin tone. I'm happy that I now know that many blues, greens and oranges (especially) are great colors for me. So think about it. What colors work best with your skin, hair and eye colors? Trends are okay, but every trend is not good for every fashionista.

Here are a few of the photos that Pati Palmer took during the color analysis. (warning some pictures are without makeup, just lipstick.  Lol)

Me being silly at the start of the session (I was a little nervous at the beginning.).  Black (hair) is okay and the three shades of brown (eyes).

Draping scrafes and swatches - The first drafted color not so good.  Doesn't really complement.

The blues and browns - better

The brown, gold, and cranberry tones are a perfect complement.

Ethel placed the colors that worked well with my skin on the table.

Next, a few close ups of the plattetts that work for me.

Browns, Reds and Oranges

Greens and Browns

Blues and Browns

A Hand Full of Colors

That's it on color.  So, how do you feel about color trends?  Do you follow them or use colors that work well with your skin tone?

PS - DD's jackets are done.  I will show them in next post.

Spring 2012 - Bold, Beautiful Color

Today is the first day of Spring and what better time than now to talk about color trends.  This installment is bold and beautiful.  Colors that pop!  I would like to include them in my spring and summer wardrobe. So which color do you plan to show off this Spring? Will you tango with tangerine or become green with envy?

To Color Block or Not

It's no wonder color blocking is everywhere.  The fall color palette includes strong, bright reds, greens and blues.  I must admit this trend was a bit over the top for me.  My thinking, one strong color is enough. Brights from shoulder to toe maybe too much for me.   So for the sake of testing the trend, I looked in my already full closet to see if I could come with a color blocked outfit.  So I paired a McCalls blouse (made 2010)and a McCalls skirt (made 2009) then added some grey patent leather shoes to see if it was a passable trendy outfit.

Oprah magazine has a different take on color blocking for the fall season.  blocks of bold colors in one garment or accessory.  Here's how.

Some curvy ladies may think this trend is over the top; Essence magazine shared these opinions for embracing bold colors.

What are your thoughts on color blocking?

Fall Is In The Air

Still have a few summer projects in the works, it's past time to start working on my fall wardrobe.

At the top of the list are; a black and white hounds tooth coat. The fabric is a gift from Marji. This coat is right in line with the fall collection of Salvatore Ferragamo. Erica B. posted some of his fall collection on her blog. This UFO was started over a year ago. It's cut, ready to sew and would be the perfect alternative to the traditional trench coat. Vogue 1257 is also high on the list. I want to make this before the harsh winter comes. What's on your list?

A few months ago, I received the Pantone color palette for Fall 2011. I like phlox, deep teal, and coffee liqueur. You may see these colors in my fall wardrobe. The color report it below for your convenience.

Spring! We're Anxiously Waiting

Over the weekend the midwest started to experience a warming trend. By Tuesday it was 61 degrees in the afternoon, and when leaving the office (5:30pm) I noticed a gleamer of sunlight. Spring is on it's way and I'm so, so happy with the anticipation of sweet smelling of flowers and green grass.

On the sewing table are several garments cut from heavy fabric: a skirt, vest, jacket. While Spring is definitely on my mind, winter will stick around Chicago for at least another six to eight weeks with a occassional day of warm weather. We have had snow storms as late as April. As we experience intermittent days of Spring, my thoughts are on what I want to wear this Spring.

Starting with color; fuchsia is a favorite becoming a focus point in my wardrobe about every eight years or so. This Spring it's named as a trend color by "Real Simple" magazine.

Best For:

Women who aren't afraid of a second look

How To Wear It:

Bold dress, break it up with a belt or jacket
If you are busty or have full hips, avoid it in those areas.
Blonds in hot pink is a no, no.

Worth the Investment:

YES! Buy one great piece; not to be worn every day, but a beautiful compliment to your wardrobe.
