The Mane Event - What's Happening to My Hair?

Are you obsessed with your Hair?  Do you frequently go to the Hair Salon?  Do you ever leave home without grooming it?  In recent years, have you noticed changes in the texture and density of it?  Is your confident level dependent on well your hair is groomed?  Do you where hair extensions to add volume or length?  Are you devastated by hair loss?

In recent years, I've had many thoughts about the overall health of my hair.  There have been moments when I was in tears because of the increased loss of hair.   Yeah, it all sounds superficial.  But women are losing their hair at a significant rate these days.  Some of it is due to medicine (high-blood pressure) or other health condition (thyroid disease or cancer).  With the huge accessibility to hair extension and countless hair professionals who add them, some women have turned to wearing hair extensions to address hair loss and to get the desired hair style.  This practice has further increased the instances of hair loss in women.

Okay.  Let's rewind..,  Let's go back to a time when hair loss was not in my thought process.  That was when I had big hair.  Back in the day when I religiously went to the hair salon every two weeks without fail.  Needless to say, I took good care of it and spend a lot of money doing it.   I never used extensions and was pleased with the density and length of it.

Then something happened.  At age 38 I started noticing a difference in the texture and density of my hair.  Occasionally I told my stylist that, "I think my hair is falling out."  Not to say she was the cause, but to acknowledge that there were changes happening to my hair and maybe some changes in the care of it may be necessary.  Well, I continue to tell her, but my persistence was not received as a proactive cry for help, but a negative declaration of her professional training and skills.  So, by the time  I was 47 and on a regiment of high-blood pressure medicine, it was noticeably thinning at the top.  To the point were if I made a part in my hair is was wider than the parts made in other areas of my hair.  This was devastating for me.  And I became more vocal about it and wanted to explore alternative hair care practices.  Needless to say, this was not well received by my stylist.  So in the end, I decided to take the care of my hair into my own hands.    The biggest change for me was to put oil and more moisture back into my hair care regiment.  No spritz or other drying agents with minimum use of heat application and reduced timing on the hair relaxer applications. This helped a little, but the bigger problems were related to my medicine, thyroid disease, and becoming a older women.

About two years ago, I came to turns with the fact that I losing my hair and it will probably continue regardless of the added oils and moisturizers.  They may slow the lose down, but inevitably I will continue to lose it.  So, with that acceptance, I'm looking at alternative ways to "keep up a good appearance about the head".  Of course, I will "wear" my own hair for as long as it looks okay.  But the the time will come when it will not.  I'm really afraid of hair extensions. So I'm left with hair pieces and wigs.

Oh, forgot to I like the current length of my hair, but if I start to look like this, I will definitely need to cut it off.

So, what are your thoughts on hair loss and treatment?  I'm sure there are some ladies/women out there who have similar stories and may be have some suggestions on how to handle hair loss condition.

Catching up - Ramblings!

Man oh man! It's been a while. There is so much to catch up on. I wanted to give a few highlights. Later for the details. I have enough material to post something every other day for the next two months. So I'm getting started.

First, many thanks to all who visit my blog and special thanks to those of you who comment and compliment. You are kind and I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Haute Couture Club Meeting - I attended the November 6th meeting. Peach Carr from Project Runway was our guest speaker. So exciting to hear about some of the behind the scene happenings at Project Runway. She was a delightful inspiration. Our annual Holiday luncheon will be held at the Terzo Piano (Art Institute of Chicago). Afterward the group will visit the Textile Exhibit.

Teaching - A few months ago, someone asked if I would teach them how to sew. You can imagine how good I felt about them asking, surprised too. We started November 6th. It's big fun. More people have asked since. Little known fact..., As a kid I wanted to become a teacher. It's such a wonderful profession. Obviously, my career choices do not clearly coincide with this desire. But over the years, I've found myself always teaching something: Taught my daughter to read at three; taught supervised employees how to data entry and produce stats; occasionally taught someone math when they were stuck on a concept or problem; Taught the media service staff (church) camera techniques, wrote training materials and conducted courses and webinars (work) for our current research application. Now, I'm teaching sewing. I guess teaching is in my blood. It funny how kids know things, not really understanding the meaning of it all.

Work - For several weeks the team has been busy producing all types of reports for our new VP. The university announced that they are more cuts coming. Ten percent for University Administration. So my unit may be hit. I pray not. The holiday season is here so work is slowing down.

Vacation - Yes, vacation again at the usual spot. Abbey - Avani Spa. Four days of treatments and relaxation. What joy.

Sewing - Today I hope to post a few things finished. This month and last month the goal was to sew wardrobe staples. Many garments were cut and about half are on hangers. And forty percent of that is finished. So I have some reviews to post. Also some holiday sewing is underway as well as a few client projects.

Thanksgiving - I'm the hostess of the day. My sisters and mom will bring a few dishes, but the major cooking is on me. I'm happy to do it for the love of my family.

Okay..., That's it for the moment.

Happy Sewing!

The Thin Economy - Showing Up at the University Part II

Some time ago I wrote a post on the troubled economy from my own personal point of view. Today, the economy has not healed. It is evident at the university where I am employed and where my daughter is an undergraduate student.

At the beginning of the year, employees were asked to furlough six days between February and June of 2010. On top of that, the university had to cut 10 percent of its staff to offset costs. Tuition is expected to rise over the next year, and some fringe benefits may be reduced or eliminated. Boy am I glad my daughter was able to take advantage of the 50 percent free tuition during her studies.

These days, I’m reflecting on my blessings that no one in my unit was cut. We, at the university, are under severe constraints. We have not realized a raise in three years. Everyone on my team is grateful for continued employment. (It would be nice to realize a raise and some hope that things will improve soon.)

One thing I’ve been eternally grateful for is the ability to make additional monies sewing. I’m still not very good with pricing. The extra money has come in handy; it helps feed my fabric and pattern addiction. Wink, wink.

Currently, I have a few clients, some for the fall and others next year. Oh yeah, I have a project for my sister and another for my cousin. All to fuel my own fabric, pattern, and wardrobe desires. So in between client projects, I’m building my wardrobe and will make a few things for my DD.

So in the face of a failing economy, God is still forever present watching over us all. I’m thankful for everything; food, shelter, clothing, employment, social events, mini vacations, family and friends.
God’s continued blessings! Happy sewing to all the fashionistas out there! Keep up the good work.

Working My Way Back To Blogging

Lately, I've had a hard time finding time to blog. Work, sewing, the season..., can't pinpoint why. But I have sewn plenty; now I need to finish something and blog it. In my sewing queue are:

- 2 coats
- 2 jackets
- 3 dresses
- 3 pants
- several accessories

A side from that I have been crocheting like crazy. It all started about three months ago when I gave my sister a bag of hats and scarves (some crocheted and some sewn {velvet}). They sold like hot cakes. Both of us were very pleased with the sells. So now I'm working on filling orders (I don't like specified orders - I prefer free styling). Anyway here are a few of the styles that I've sold. My niece is always the willing model. Of course, she put an order in too.

Hopefully, after I get some rest (today I'm too tired to sew), I can get sewn garments finished.

Happy Sewing and Happy Holidays!

Vacation and Sewing

It feels like it's been ages since I last blogged. Just before vacation time I couldn't seem to find time to blog post or read. Well I must say after being away, it's even harder getting back into it.

Last month's I vacationed (cruised) to the Bahamas. It was excellent! Four days and four nights is a good first cruise. This time in the Bahamas not much time on the beach, but plenty of time about Freeport and Nassau. Katrina (cousin) and I did a few tours during the days at port, and spent the evenings with the rest of the group. Loads of fun. Here are a some of the photos:

Sewing.., Of course..., It's mostly about the sewing. I've made two dresses, two pairs of pants and two skirts. Currently working on jackets for DD and coat for me. Will post my reviews and pictures soon. Finally, Minister Ross's husband sent me pictures of all of the robes that I've made for her. The first one (white and gold) made..., I'm thinking about twelve years ago. Not sure. Then I wasn't to keen on taking photos of completed projects.

This week off to the Abbey for some relaxing spa treatments. That's all for now.

Kreativ Blogger Award 2009

Thanks to three lovely ladies, I have been nominated three times for the Kreativ Blogger Award. Josie, Trudy, and Ivalyn all thought me worthy. Of course, I need to tell seven things about myself. Hmmm.., I think I've shared quite a bit already. Maybe some of the new bloggers will say, "Oh I didn't know that." lol Also, I have to nominate seven other bloggers. Now that will be hard. Most of the crafty ladies have already been nominated. So hear goes:

Spottedroo
Stitch and Snitch
JTS Closet
Allisonc C Sewing Gallery
Faye's Sewing Adventure
Krustallos
Kbenco

These are just a few of the creative blogs that I follow. There are so many, many that have been nominated already. So consider this my short list.

Seven things about me..., What can I say that I haven't say before; I guess I could talk about current things:

-Going on a cruise pretty soon. Didn't make anything new to take with. Decided to finish client projects to free up my time and make a little cash. I've travelled a bit, but this is my first cruise and I'm so excited.

-Started sewing DD's wardrobe.

-Making three coats for me this fall/winter.

-Seriously thinking about going back to school. Also want to take a course or two at the neighborhood tailoring school. Can't until next year. I enjoy structured learning.

-Planning to create a line of accessories to sell.

-Planning to make most of my Christmas gift this year.

-This week I will complete my certification for non-linearing editing (CanTV). I'm one of the co-producer for the media services auxiliary at my church.

That's it for now. Happy sewing!

Ramblings: Sewing, Fashion Fall 2009, Beyonce

Happy Monday everyone!

Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

Unfortunately, I didn't sew a stitch this weekend. I wanted to, but it just didn't happen. This week I hope to cut out a few items for myself and DD. Very little progress on the "Career Wardrobe" design for DD. I do have a few patterns and fabric in mind, but nothing final.

On Friday, I was spying Carolyn's flickr set. She has already posted some ideas for her Elegant Fall wardrobe. My goodness, she is super proactive. I'm still working on the summer wardrobe. At the next pattern sale, I'm going to grab the hooded jacket and Badgley Mischka dress pattern. Super cute.

This weekend I got to see Ms. Beyonce in concert (second time around). She is an all around entertainer. This year's concert had more of a little bit of everything: rock, pop, rap, and Beyonce, Destiny's Child, and Sasha. The special affects put me in the mind of the MJ 1988 concert at the Rosemont Horizon. The 2007 program was more appealing to me, but I still enjoyed it. At various point of the concert, the music and the roar of the crowd was deafening. Either I’m getting old or it was really loud. Lol Here's is an opening shot of friday night's conert.

Tickets were $25 more than the 2007 price, inflation. No dinner outing this time. lol

Summertime And The Living Is Easy - Family Road Trip

Aunt Essie (82) escorted by Paris as we entered Fire Mountain Restaurant in Michigan (July 11, 2009).

It's been two solid weeks since I last blogged. It has not been due to lack of content or inspiration. I've been a little distracted with "Facebook" and other activities.

A few months ago, Katrina (cousin) and I talked about a road trip to see our Aunt Doris. Our mothers are up in age. We thought it would be good for them/us to get together. So Trina organized a road trip to visit Aunt Doris in Michigan.

We embarked on our journey July 10th, 4:30am, headed towards Michigan. It reminded me of how much I enjoy my extended family and the importance of fellowshiping with them.

There are four sisters living; all of my mom's brothers have past. Only Aunt Essie travelled with us. My mom (Chicago) and Aunt Clara (Alabama) had other obligations and couldn't make the trip (next time).

Day One July 10th - We arrived.

We arrived about 9:15 am July 10, 2009. Pictured Shirley, Aunt Doris and Essie, and Bnai.

This last time Aunt Doris saw Lauren was sixteen years ago at a family reunion in Tennessee. Trina is re-introducing Lauren to Aunt Doris. July 10, 2009.

Cousin Shirley always pulled together and ready. This woman is the epitome of hospitality. Before we could all get into Aunt Doris's house, she was getting to work on putting dinner together. BTW- She's Paris's mom.

After initial visit, we headed to the hotel, leaving Aunt Essie to spend time with Aunt Doris.

Day Two - July 11, 2009. Aunt Doris took us to her favorite all you can eat restaurant (Fire Mountain). It reminded me of the buffet restaurant in the Stratosphere (Las Vegas). Hmmm..., Hmmm.., Good eatin'.

Later that day, we went back to the hotel: swimming, joking, laughing, and playing spades until 2:30 in the morning.

Day Three - July 12, 2009, 11:00am

We left the hotel headed back to Aunt Doris's home. We talked, laughed and then prayed for a safe return to Chicago.

On the ride back, Destiny danced to Michael Jackson's "Beat It".

As I mature, I become more appreciative of the time that God has given me. Just back from a visit with my Aunt Doris (Michigan), who is well into her 70's. Also visiting my Aunt Essie (82) and several of my cousins. It was wonderful and I'm looking forward to the next gathering. Both of my aunts are well and able to take care of themselves (and others). It's a blessing and I pray it's in "my" future.

Good road trip. Summertime and the living is easy, fun with family is always a plus.

Stuck - Flight Delayed A Second Time! Grrr!

The conference is over and I'm stuck at the airport. This is so irritating, but what can I do about it? Nothing. So I'm sitting here reading blogs and thinking about project planning for the "summer" wardrobe.

So far this year, I have made five dresses, five vest/jackets, two pairs of pants, and one skirt for myself. For DD: one dress, three pairs of pants, and a vest. Clients: three skirts, four dresses, five accessories, and four jackets/covers ups. Quite a list of completed projects so far.

This summer, I'm hoping to design a wardrobe for DD (Career). She'll be graduating from college next spring. Part of my gift to her is a mini wardrobe. She most look polished and professional when she starts her "new job". Graduation isn't for several months so I probably won't start sewing it until late in year. In the meantime, I'll work out the wardrobe design, decide on a color palette, and gather fabric and notions.

Another project on the horizon is making some jeans, following some Palmer/Pletcsh tips.

To match, shabby chic t-shirts. Last week I read an article in "Real Simple" that featured the evolution of the infamous t-shirt. There were some very interesting designs. I'm inclined to copy one or two. Pom-pom adorned to sheer trim contrasts with rich jewel tones to a flowy white tee.

Well, I guess I'll go back to reading. I have two more hours to wait in this d**n airport. Grrr! I see telecommuting in my future the rest of the week.

Happy Sewing, fashionistas!

So Distracted

It's been over a week since my last post. I've had very little time to blog, but managed to get some sewing done. And you better believe that I have dreamed about upcoming sewing projects and things to blog about.

Anywayyyy...,

Last week my team (work) had our annual two day retreat in Urbana. We spent the working hours developing our strategic plan for the coming year. We discussed, roles changes, goals, and policies and procedures. It's a big to do and is exhausting to say the least. One good thing is it keeps us on task and gives us a clearer view of the expectations of each team member and the group as a whole. The second good thing is no evaluations this year. No money, no increases, no evaluations. Only glad about the no evaluations. Typically, each person evaluates themselves. Then meets with the project manager, who has also prepared an evaluation, to discuss all of the "stuff" discussed at the retreat from an individual point of view.

Mid-June three of us (team) will travel to Albany, NY, for the annual User Group Meeting. I've cut out a some pants to wear during the conference. I'm hoping to make two new outfits for the trip.

Memorial Day Weekend - Both Hancock's and JoAnn's had great sales. Of course, I bought a few patterns and cuts of fabrics. I'm sure most of my sewing and blogging buddies took advantage of the sales. I haven't read many blogs lately, but plan to catch up this week.

Plans within plans - Quite a few sewists/designers have posted reviews of making jeans, all have done a fabulous job of creating unique designs and sharing techniques. I plan to jump on the jean band wagon this summer too. Also plan to make a few garments from vintage patterns. Two weeks ago, while searching through my vintage patterns I found a Plamer/Pletsch vintage jean pattern. It's loaded with tips and techniques for making a great pair of jeans. I used this pattern over twenty-five years ago to make jeans for my mom. Back then I didn't pay close attention to all the benefits. I'm glad I kept this one and will share the tips and techniques with you.

More later and Happy Sewing!
