We are about four weeks away from Easter. Not a lot of time. I've a few clients projects (separate posts). So I'm starting now on DD's Easter outfit. From my first muslin attempt I noticed quite a few alterations. Particularly in the shoulder area. I cut size 10 of S2588-first view on the left. Also revealed DD has square shoulder. It's very noticeable in this dress. From the muslin notes, you can see my challenge. I slashed the sleeve trying to see if that would help. I also pondered making slashes in the front and back yoke but decided that wouldn't solve the problem. The "pull" seems to be in the sleeves and upper bodice area just below the yoke. Any suggestions??? I definitely need to make another muslin to get it right. Other alterations observed: prince seam (front needs to be move just a little (1/4") towards the center and small sway back adjustment. The bottom of the back bodice needs a small adjustment as well, but I will wait until I see how the other changes affect the fit. This weekend I want to do the second muslin to see if I can solve the fitting issues. Suggestions on the broad, square shoulder alteration would be greatly appreciated.
I'm also making a matching jacket, S2558 view A-short version with bell sleeves.
The fabric that I'm using for the outfit is a fit from Marji. DD really likes the fabric.
Sorry I really can't offer fitting suggestions (I have no clue), but thanks for reminding me to get moving on my Easter dress!
ReplyDeleteYou are always so ahead of time with your sewing. Love that fabric and know the outfit will be marvelous.
ReplyDeleteThe fabric is absolutely gorgeous...as far as the fitting...you already know that I am the worst in adjusting wardrobe. But I will tell you what I always tell myself "MAKE IT BIGGER!"...it almost never work out to well, but it's my strategy.
ReplyDeleteI'm a planner like you! Right now I am cutting fabric for a test run dress, which is prep for an Easter dress. I hate waiting until the last minute...
ReplyDeleteOmigosh, don't talk to me about fitting daughters. It's hard to begin with and then they're so dang fussy! Good luck, my friend!
ReplyDeleteThe fabric is beautiful. I like the dress choice, and enjoy watching you work on your projects.
ReplyDeleteThanks, ladies. I'll try to post the second muslin on Saturday.
ReplyDeleteDid you find a solution?
ReplyDeleteThere is some great information on square shoulders in Sandra Betzina's "Fast Fit" book and the "Perfect Fit" Book. If you don't have these ref books let me know and I will scan the information for you.
Ann- No solution yet. I looked through some of my sewing books. But did not find anything specifically speaks to a square shoulder alteration for this design. Anything that you may have would be greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
C
Yikes! Four weeks away?!? I'd better get with the program.
ReplyDeleteYour dd will be gorgeous in that rich color.
I'm not sure this will be a solution with a shorter cap, but here's a link to a Raglan Cap Height Tutorial I recently came across while looking for something else:
ReplyDeletehttp://thesewingdivas.wordpress.com/2007/01/19/raglan-sleeve-cap-height-alteration-tutorial/
It's written by ELS of The Sewing Divas and looks great. Possibly you could just move the slash UP the sleeve cap to use for your alteration.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, Nedra. Ladies, I didn't have a chance to make the second muslin. Too much to do over the weekend. May be this week. We will see what happens.

No suggestions, but I hope you were able to get it all worked out. My plan was to start an Easter dress this weekend, however, it now looks like I'm sewing a formal gown instead. Oops! Nothing like hearing about an event last minute.
