Notes on a Pattern - McCall 7057, View B

Today's installation of Notes on a Pattern is McCall's 7057.  This is a new fall Palmer/Pletsch jacket.  At first sight, I knew I would make it.  For some unknown reason, JoAnn's does not have the new patterns when they are first released.  When it was finally available in stores, I was lucky to find this one still in the box next to the cabinets.

Anyway.. What do I like about this jacket?  Several weeks ago, I pinned a similar jacket on my Pinterest board:  This Should be In My Closet.  I like the hood that doubles as a shawl collar; it is a comfy versatile wrap jacket that can be dressed up or down; and, finally, it's easy to make.

It's described as a loose-fitting, unlined vest and jackets have front extending into hood or collar and side front seams.  View B has a belt, self-lined front and pockets.  It has princess seams, which are not clearly illustrated in drawing.  The guide sheet shows the design lines more clearly.

This is a Palmer/Pletsch pattern.  Fitting and tips included. Because I really like this jacket, I'm moving it to the top of the list of things to make.  I'm still hunting for the right fabric for it.  Fabric.com has a  wool melton that would probably fit the bill.  Polar fleece is another option.

So, what do you think about this new pattern?

Happy Sewing!

  1. Oh, I like this one too. Too bad I have no need for any more coats--Perhaps the vest version. Look forward to your make!

    1. I guess I'm lucky. Living In Chicago gives me plenty of opportunies to wear all types of outerwear.

    1. I look forward to seeing your jacket. What fabric are you planning to use?

  3. I'm anxious to see yours because when I saw the photo (I did not look at the line drawing) I had no interest and now I know why. The fabric! Love the Pinterest version. Just goes to show how a fabric can make or break a look......

  4. Eileen, I agree. The pattern version is not attractive.. I'm glad I was able to look past it to see the design lines. The recommended fabrics require some stretch.
    Thank you.

  5. I like the idea at first glance. Then I think about it deeper and see a robe. The pattern has potential though if you use a different color on the lapel and maybe the belt matching the lapel. Sorry if I am too sincere. I hope I do not hurt your feelings.

    1. Dicca85, no feelings hurt. It's good to hear your thoughts on this pattern. Sure, I saw the robe too. I think it is important to select the appropriate fabric. Thanks again.

  6. I added this one to my stash on Friday this weekend! I'm excited to see what fabric you settle on. With our chilly weather coming the next weed, something cozy and wind resistant sounds appealing.

  7. Love it and your Chicago weather certainly demands that hood/collar combo!

  9. I hate the pattern envelope photo for this one--it looks like a bathrobe, as others have noted. But I like the line drawing. I'll probably pick up this pattern when McCall's are on sale one of these days. This is definitely something that I would make/wear, but I have a bunch of other projects in various states of UFO-ness right now that I want to finish first.

  10. Hi there. I picked up this pattern from HL yesterday. Yes, it does have a "robe-ish" vish, but I think in the wool melton you mentioned it will look good. I have a dark green wool as well as some black in my stash. But the selections on Fabric.com are tempting. Are you planning on lining or underlining yours?

  11. I'm adding this one to my wishlist, thanks for bringing it up! I'd make view B,... I'll definitely keep an eye out for suitable fabrics

  12. I like the pattern, but I think the fabric McCall's used is all wrong and really does make it look like you just hacked the bottom off of a bathrobe! In the right, non textured, fabric though - anything like the gorgeous one shown on your pinterest link for example, it will be great.

  13. Your post peaked my interest in this coat. I have some coat material, had it for several years now, and yet to make anything. I keep looking for the right pattern. You are tall and probably can pull off wearing a hood and turn it back to have a full collar. Me being petite, this may overwhelm my size. I do like it though!

  14. I'm looking forward to seeing you make this. I like the pattern's line drawings, and the styling of the photographs, but like other people have noted--it could look like a bathrobe. I plan on buying this pattern and several others from McCall's latest release. I want to study the pattern and figure out what tweaks would make it look more like a stylish jacket. I know that I would add an inside pocket so I would be able to store some cosmetics. I have no doubt that your garment will be stylish.

  15. I picked this one up too, and have some thick royal blue boucle sweater knit that I am planning to use for it as an indoor sweater. I think the thing that keeps it from entering bathrobe territory is the sleeve cuff circumference. It's quite a bit narrower than most robe style sleeves. I'm considering lengthening it and using it for a robe pattern as well, but would probably widen that cuff if I do.

  16. I like the fullness around the neck almost giving it a scarf look, sure to keep you warm! no hoodies, they mess up the hair lol! lol!
