My Latest Projects Sewn with Coats Eloflex Stretchable Threads

I was so happy to be selected to try out Coats new Eloflex stretchable thread. Initially, I thought of all sorts of "knit" things to sew. Once the initial excitement wore off, I decided to test the thread on something quick and easy.  But first, I wanted to closely examine the fiber of the thread to take note of the look, stretch and feel of it between my fingers. It reminded me of embroidery thread. Then I tried pulling it while holding it between two fingers.

This might sound a little crazy, but I wanted to see if it actually had stretch and if it would break easily.  Yes, it stretch and it did not break when I pulled on it.    I wanted to assess the usability before I tried it in the sewing machine.  I inserted a new Schwetz stretch needle, size 75/11; threaded a bobbin and the machine. I was able to use the thread like other thread without experiencing breakage or skipped stitches. I tested the stitching by holding the fabric taut and stretching it a little as the fabric passed through the needle plate area of the sewing machine.  It sews beautifully.  The stitches were the best when the fabric was slightly stretched though.

I really want you to try it out for yourself.  Please leave a comment indicating that you would like to enter a drawing for a packet of ten spools of thread in a variety of colors.  Just like the packet below.  I will send it to the person who's name is drawn.  If you would like to purchase the thread, you can find it at your location JoAnn's Fabric and Craft stores.

Also, go to the "Make It Coats" website to enter a contest for a grand prize.  The link is here.  Take a tour of the Make It Coats website for other products and project ideas.

Don't forget to let me know if you want to be included in to drawing for the packet of thread.

Thank you and Happy Sewing!
C

  1. Very interesting Cennetta! I would definitely like to give this thread a twirl! Since sewing with knits is my prefer fabric, seems like stretch thread should be a staple in my sewing arsenal! Please enter me in the drawing! Thank you!

  4. Cennetta, I bought two spools of this thread after Ann Steeves of Gorgeous Fabrics reviewed it. I had a bit of trouble with it sewing a bathing suit using this thread in both the top and in the bobbin. The thread broke twice and was not easy to thread being a bit thicker and ravelry. I swapped the top spool out for a Coats polyester and continued with no problem. I was using a standard zigzag stitch on a Bernina 1008 with a Schmetz 11/70 stretch needle. I used the swimsuit yesterday. Also no problem but we will see how it holds up compared to the suits previously made. My take; not worth the money if you are already using a stitch with stretch. Have yet to use it with a straight stitch though.

    1. Thanks, Theresa. This is helpful information. I didn't use a stretch stitch yet but will try it as you suggested. Thanks again.

  5. I have sewn with elastic thread in the bobbin previously and it requir ed adjusting the bobbin's tension a bit. I used the thread on a non-knit fabric to sew several rows creating rouching. The end result was beautiful and the rouching was stable because of the all purpose top thread used for the needle. That said, I am happy you brought this thread to our attention. It's the first that I've heard of it and I have not seen it in my local fabric stores. Please enter me into the drawing. Thank you for a wonderful post and showing both your shirred and draped sleeves, they are beautiful.

  7. I am interested in the thread. I have never been thrilled with Coats all purpose threads compared to Gutterman and Metrosene. But after recently using Coats thread on a project where I needed an exact color match for seaming and some decorative work with thicker thread I changed my mind. I would love to try this out.

  8. Yes! Please enter my name in the drawing for the Eloflex thread set! I am so curious to try this thread to improve my experience with sewing on knits. I am a long-time lover of using Coats threads and have a drawer full of their luscious colors, so I'm sure this new stretchy thread will not disappoint!

  10. I'd love to enter - but a small problem, I can't figure out how!! (yes, I'm that far behind the times!) I don't think anonymous is a good choice. It's great timing, as I'm sewing all things knit for the grandkids, especially crib sheets and onesies for the newest one. Even if I don't win, I'll be trying this thread.

  13. Thanks for hosting the drawing! I'd love to win. And I love your top! I find that a deep cowl neck is flattering to a full bust if it's drapey. Mine are always too low and show too much cleavage and I haven't figured out how to alter the pattern without destroying the lovely drape. Any ideas?

    1. Thanks, Kat Z. Sandra Betzina has a Fast Fit book that teaches how to do this. I'll be posting a review soon that includes this illustration. This has been a problem for me in the past too. This particular top doesn't hand too low for me though.

  24. This is so cool! I love sewing with knits, but I always have a problem with my twin needle hems coming undone from overstretching (even with using woolly nylon in the bobbin!), so I'd love to try this out and see if it helps. Thanks so much for the giveaway!
